Advanced Clients not initializing.
Hello All.
I have Googled this problem and i'm coming to the end of the line!
I have 3 SMS 2003 SP2 sites. We'll call them A,B and C. A is the Central Primary site, B and C are Primary child sites. The hierarchy is established across the sites and all was well up to about a month ago. All of a sudden all the clients on site B have lost their list of "Actions" in the actions tab of the control panel SMS icon except for Machine Policy Retrieval and User Policy Retrieval. On top of this, the newly built PC's are appearing in my "All Systems" Collection , but are showing up as being in a "Workgroup", not on the Domain. These PC's are definately on the Domain. The PC's are acurrately showing as being assigned and having a client installed in the SMS MMC. Site B's servers, just 2 of them, are showing up in my collection as domain members, but i think that was before this problem started. Since then, all the XP workstations have started joining the domain after a new roll out, but it looks like the SMS client hasn't initialized properly as they are all showing up in the MMC as workgroup members! AARRGGHH! I have pasted a section from ccmexec.log below. Any help would be really appreciated. I have tried using the toolkit and it shows the MP is running okay, i have re-installed IIS, i have re-installed the MP. All is up and running fine but i am still unable to get the clients to initialize. Under the "Components" tab in the control panel, all the components are showing as "installed", but none are Enable or Disabled. The clients auto discover their MP and WINS has all MP's listed, and the static SLP entry is in there too. What the hell have i missed?? Thanks in Advance Mani
p.s I have replaced the ip address with x.x.x.x as i am working in a secure environment.

Oh, i forgot to add, unfortunately, we are not gifted with the lovely AD here, it's still an NT4.0 domain! :-( , i have checked the site boundaries and they are definately in different subnets. There are not that many clients per site, so i am using the default subnet that's appeared in the Boundaries tab on all the site servers. However, i have taken no chances and have put the subnets that are used on each site in the Site Boudaries tab, and the Roaming Boundaries tab, to no avail. :-(
I will add, that i have looked in Clientlocation.log and Locationservices.log and it shows that the clients are talking to the MP and it's finding it through WINS, i have pasted some logs below:

Re: Advanced Clients not initializing.
Clients that only have 2 actions tell me that the MP is having issues. I would start there by reviewing the mpcontrol.log on the server.
Since you do not have Active Directory, you must be either directly installing the client or using Network Discovery. Since your systems are "showing" as workgroup and not in the domain, what network discovery settings do you have? Are you looking at subnets, the domain, snmp or what? Whereever it reads from must not have the domain listed. For example, if your network discovery reads from your router's ARP cache, it may not have the domain info.
What happens if you install the client by hand. That client should show up in the console as a domain member, not a workgroup. Tell me what happens when you do that. If you don't get anything, then you have server issues because the client can't communicate.
The default boundary subnet is the subnet the server is on. Are your clients on the same subnet as the server? If not, you will have to add them too.

Re: Advanced Clients not initializing.
Thanks for your reply Brian.
As for the client installation method, i haven't used either that you mentioned. :-) We have ghosted the PC's with the client already installed. We ran the ccmdelcert.exe utility on the client once installed on the master PC, imaged it and then install it to a group of PC's. Once on, it starts to initialize and pick up it's default MP. It works a treat and it did work on site B up to a month ago. I have no network discovery settings enabled as i don't need them, i only have heartbeat discovery running. You have come up with an interesting point though, at that particular site they have had some extreme network issues and i think their router has been down a few times, i will investigate that. I have tried installing the client manually and it still comes up with the http error in ccmexec.log. I can plainly see that the client is not talking to the MP, but i did the http://smssiteserver/sms_mp/.sms_aut?mplist and http://smssiteserver/sms_mp/.sms_aut?mpcert and it worked. I need to add that even though the only 2 servers on that subnet are showing that they are in the Domain on the MMC, the SMS client on them still has the actions list pretty much empty. The clients are on the same subnet as the server. Any other ideas would be really helpful

Re: Advanced Clients not initializing.
can you post the mpcontrol.log file for server B? Just the last 20 lines or so...

Re: Advanced Clients not initializing.
No problem Brian, i have checked another blog and they insisted that the entire SMS site needs to be removed and re-installed. Is this really necessary?

Re: Advanced Clients not initializing.
I would not think so. Your log looks perfect.
I wonder what you see if you connect the console to both server A & B. Do all the resources look the same in All Systems on both the primary and central primary?

Re: Advanced Clients not initializing.
Yes they do Brian. No matter how i connect , it still shows as all the site B clients in a Workgroup. Remember, because i have access to the Central site, the collections i created there get propagated down to the child sites below, so if i see it on the central, i'll see it on site B as well. I have been asked by my boss to ring Microsoft UK in the morning. Such a shame, i really thought i could sort this out. I'm at home now, it's 9.50pm but i will have another go at it tomorrow. If you need any other logs let me know Brian, i'd be more than happy to post them :-) By the way, just to remind you that the site B servers and the site B SMS server itself also had advanced clients installed on them that once worked, but now don't, and the servers have static IP addresses well within the site boundary, so i think that definately eliminates site boundary issues.

Re: Advanced Clients not initializing.
Brian
In the end Microsoft Premier Support were not as helpful as i wanted them to be, in the end i entirely removed IIS, SQL, BITS and SMS 2003. I re-installled everything and then added site B back to the hierarchy. I made sure i removed any site B PC's from the Central site collections. I then proceeded to re-install the clients on the servers and re-build some new PC's , as the MP guid would have changed, and the Clients are now responding and showing up as Domain and not workgroup. I'm not sure what happened, but i can't help thinking there may have been some corruption within the MP or IIS because of the winHTTP errors. Thanks you very much for your help though.
