Help with Profile and Users Directory's

I am teaching my self Server 2003 with the aim to taking the MCSA / E, but I am having problems with User accounts.

I managed to setup the server and promote it to a DC with DNS working. My problem is that I can create a user account and add groups but I want to make the accounts roaming. I created 2 folders on my D drive called Profiles and Users and then share these folders. I then go to AD and the account and in the profile tab add the line \\server1\Profiles\%username% and repeat for the Home directory \\Server1\Users\%username%. When I log in with that user account on my test pc running windows XP I get the error that it cannot load my roaming profile and logs in with a temp profile. The home drive is mapped but I then get the error access denied.

The user folder has the username in the permissions with modify rights and the same goes for the Profile folder. Can anyone point me in the direction of a Tutorial or through some light onto what permissions I need to have on these folders and the containing folders. Also can i use "$" at the end of the share name ie Profiles$ to make the folder hidden?

    Many Thanks

    TG

Yes, you can have a hidden share on the server. the trick is the permission structure on the server. You need to have a group of users on the hidden folder and then remove inherited permissions for the folders below. Create a folder for the user account you want and give full control to it. See if that helps. Sounds like you have the user account settings right, but it's been a few years since I did roaming profile.
