Dear All

I need to move a the SMS 2003 database to a new centralised SQL Server 2000 next week in my client, I have setup similar lab environment. 

1 AD, 1 SMS 2003+SQL 2000  need to convert to 1 AD, 1 SMS 2003 and 1 SQL 2000 Database

After Stop all service related to SQL 2000 and SMS 2003 I have backup and restore the SMS Data to remote server.

Then I have sucessfully  run SMS 2003 setup and  choose modify the installation to use the remove database server.

After I open the SMS 2003 administrator console it cannot connect to the remote database the error is "connection failed"

I suspected that there are no enough right to access the SQL Database on remote server from SMS 2003 Administrator Console

this is due the advance security mode of SMS 2003 that use local system account that don't have access to remote SQL.

Please advise?

 I have add the SmsServer computer on the administrators group of AD but no result.

Did you refer this link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc180494.aspx  before moving the database or have you done al the steps mentioned in the link.?

I do refer to the http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc180494.aspx before moving the database, Step No1 to No6

runn smoothly with no error.

Finally I successfully move the database  to remote server.
In my opinion the info on http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc180494.aspx  is not complete yet.
Please do expect the error of connection after setup and modify the installation .

Need to run these steps after that:

1. On the SMS console please action and connect to database-> chose previous database server name it works fine
2. On the site system on the tab of management point, server locator point and reporting point change to the remote database
3. Rerun setup
4. And finally you can check in to your SMS Console
