need help in installing SMS 2003 with SQL 2005

    Hello,

Im trying to install SMS 2003 SP2 along with SQL 2005. At the last moment Im getting this error

"The Windows server xxxxx that is running the SQL Server is down or not on the network, or your current Windows logon ID does not allow you to access the Windows server.

Either the SQL Server is in a Windows NT 4 domain or this computer's machine account does not have Administrator's privileges on the SQL Server.  To install a site in advanced security, all servers must be in Active Directory and the site server's machine account must have Administrator's privileges on the SQL Server."

    Please help me in this.

When I checked the SMSSETUP.LOG file, it shows as

    <02-26-2007 16:09:19> Starting evaluation process.
<02-26-2007 16:09:19> Enough free disk space.
<02-26-2007 16:09:19> Checking domain for advanced security, PDC for domain SMSRND is \\SCVM4
<02-26-2007 16:09:19> No server type detected from registry
<02-26-2007 16:09:19> The NT machine WIPRO1 that's running the SQL server is down.
<02-26-2007 16:09:25> The machine account doesn't have admin rights to the SQL server

I didnt understand why it says "The machine account doesn't have admin rights to the SQL server" Please let me know what I should do to give the admin rights and where I should give?

    thanks,

    Dinesh

Is the SQL instance on the same box or another? Add the SMS server name to the locla admin group and see if that helps.

    Hi Brian,

Thanks for your message. I tried adding the SMS server name to the local admin group and even its not working. After adding to the local group, Im getting the message as

"SQL Server is not installed on computer xxxxx.  You must enter a correct SQL Server name".

SQL is running on a different machine. I tried running the SMS setup on the machine where SQL resides, still the same problem.

Please help me to run through this and also if you have any video files or any steps regarding this, please let me know.

    thanks,

    Dinesh

Was this installation of SQL 2005 the default instance? SMS requires it to be the default instance.

    Brian,

Yes, it is the default instance. At this moment, I have a doubt. Does SQL 2005 needs to be installed where AD (Active Directory) resides?

     thanks,

    Dinesh

I remember there being an issue with Installing SMS with SQL 2005, but I thought it was resolved. This may sounds ugly, but install SQL 2000 and SP, then SMS, then upgrade to SQL 2005 and then SP.

Wait, the SQL server is not in AD where the SMS server is? No, that won't work..

Re: need help in installing SMS 2003 with SQL 2005

    Hi Brian,

This question may sound silly but I would like to get that clarified. SQL 2005 is installed in one machine (say A) and I would like to install SMS 2003 in the other machine (say B), is there any setting that needs to be kept in mind while installing SMS in the other?

     thanks,

    Dinesh

I don't deal directly with the database usually.  But we did encounter an issue with a new deployment of another system (not SMS server) that required certain trusts to be setup on the SQL 2005 box.  The security model changed for SQL 2005 so look at the trusted connections stuff.

    Hi Dinesh,

I got exactly the same problem. And I am trying to fix it for days. Did you fix it? If so please help me with it.

    Thanks!
