Would the proposed solution work for me?
I Have SMS SP3 and I also have 5 regional servers that are acting as distribution points only. The database is located on a remote SQL server

Do an in-place upgrade of my existing SMS server to SCCM.

Install SCCM on another clean server and set it up as a child server to replicate data.

Decommision the initial upgraded SMS server

Then move the SQL Database that SCCM from its current SQL Server to our clustered SQL Server environment
-
Happily go on my way
